Conversations with God don’t always feel straight forwards, or even intuitive, but in any good relationship we must start by sorting ourselves, not other.

In my life, I have spent a good portion of my time ‘canceling’ thoughts that I thought were unproductive, or just ‘bad.’ It seems to me, since entering into the phase of life where I greet the unfavorable thoughts with love and kindness, understanding how they relate to me, is where I have seen the most success in discovering the relationships with God is real. Relationship with Other is real. It was never God slowing my roll, but me getting in my own way.

Divorcing ourselves from negative thoughts does not make us better, kinder humans. Canceling thoughts doesn’t work. Suppressing thoughts works as about as good as being in the pool and trying to sink a soccer ball. Get it deep enough, it will launch itself out and it you in the face.

Only God knows how many times I have uttered or thought Her name. Calling on Her or angels is a useful skill, if we first organize ourselves to receive. Looking back, I see more than a dozen times I called out but I was not receptive to receive. We would not tolerate another human imposing their will on us. God will honor our…
