Most of us have negative tapes in our head. Some of the phrases and disparaging statements were given to us, mostly by family. Some of our internal disparagement we adopted along the way, sometimes from natural self doubt, sometimes from seriously, self imposed negativity from existing in depressed states we held for longer than necessary. Sometimes, it’s just a feature of the human brain to find fault. It can take serious, intentional effort to overcome habitual thinking. Most of us would not tolerate a friend, or even a spouse, talking bad about us. We’d fire those friends. But how do you fire your own voice?
How we respond to life circumstances is a complex feature of how we perceive our personality in relationship to other personalities, real and perceived, with our brains constantly doing math to determine our level of social acceptance.
Learning new ways to think is possible. There are many methods available, like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or CBT. It works. There are medical journal suggesting the efficacy is not as statistically relevant as previously endorsed. If you consider for a moment that all the dialogue running in your head is relational in nature, you may find narrative therapy as an easier pathway out of negative thinking.
