Dark and Deadly, Aliens and Humans
There is a dark side to life. We tend to not discuss it. Some of us won’t even look in the mirror. Is the alien secret that they can crueler than humans?
One might argue there are some things not meant for the faint of heart. We do like to protect each other. It’s especially moral to do so, especially innocent folks and children. An exception might be that anyone born on Earth is subject to death and mayhem. Very few will visit this planet and coast with no unpleasantness, only to die before their loved ones. Humans engage in dark behaviors. Let’s rule out behaviors necessary to live. No human, no animal, no plant, lives completely free of the taste of death. If aliens are part of nature and death is a part of life, are humans the prey?

It is a scary proposition. Humans have created philosophies that sentient beings would not eat or kill other sentient beings. That’s certainly not true of our species. We kill and eat each other. Not all of us. Obviously. Most of us most of the time avoid causing harm to others. We apologize when we perceive we’ve over reached. We, and most life, cooperate with other life forms. Humans don’t live in a vacuum. We’re dependent on all life being well.
Intelligence, just like physical prowess, has been used to control, subvert, pervert, and abuse people, systems, and life. All our philosophies are geared towards explaining and or justifying our behaviors, our very existence. Some philosophies are extreme. Machiavellian may be seen as unscrupulous, but utilitarianism can be practical. Jains, on the other side, practice such a peculiar patience that they limit their diet to fruit that has fallen from the tree.
Our psychology is hinged not on functionality, but in sorting the good and bad of it all, and nothing is so good that it won’t kill you. Sunshine and puppies also come with death. Too much sun, too much darkness, that’s obvious. Maybe you are comforted by stories where some pets laid down and died next to their dead owners. There are also stories of pets eating their dead owners because they couldn’t help themselves.
