Are there souls, or one soul? Pope John Paul II proclaimed that animals do have souls and are “as near to God as men are.” Some might argue nearer. There are some that suggest each species has a shared soul. Delores Cannon, in a discussion with a human under deep hypnosis, held a conversation with an entity that suggested that very thing, but as individual animals start to display individuated character traits, they mature the soul-species, allowing for more sophisticated levels of individual uniqueness. Dogs interacting with humans, for example, are more likely to develop significant personalities, so much so that they are considered family and are frequently encountered in near death experiences. Though interacting with dogs, we mature their souls.
