Discussing aliens, or anything subjective or objective philosophy is actually the bane of academia, and leads to improvement in tech and great fiction...

But more on the of suppression of thought in general. Would you rather live in a world of diversity but the illusion that everyone thinks as you might prefer, of would you like to truly know what people think or feel or speculate on? One of the greatest books ever, if only measured by longevity is "The Art of War." There is a concept in there, Keep your friends close, keep your enemies closer- because you will learn more from the people you disagree with than you will from friends.
