Here Comes the Son

In San Jose, kids are attending summer school to help minimize the effect of COVID. My son had his first day yesterday and in our daily virtual meetup he reported being happy to be back in school in person. And then he engaged me in a song. “Here Comes the Sun,” was first off his tongue. He has the chorus down. He stops at ‘Little Darling” and tells me to complete it because he hasn’t memorized it yet.

The Beatles are not new to my son. We started his introduction when he was an infant. “Black Bird” was likely the first one that took. We have lots of songs and artists now under our belts. On his first three Christmases, I pulled out my paternal grandfather’s reel to reel player, a Sony portable reel to reel player. Not portable like a walk man, but it closed up and you could lug this 70 pound contraption to a remote location. We listened to The New Christi Minstrels, and The Sound of Music. The only reason we didn’t pull it out on the 4th Christmas is that it stopped working, and I haven’t a clue how to fix it.

I am sad. One of the few rational statements my mom gave to my grandfather, “It would be easier to teach him (me) to operate it than keep him away from it.” I, too, was once 3. I am sure by the hundredth rewind to “The Cat Came Back” he was in agreement. Christmases were spent in the safest room in the house, my…
