Still, you quoted Sagan: “Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.” Did you know, though he was a skeptic, he published an ancient alien theory in a legitimate scientific journal? That statement has become a maxim which shuts down arguments. Avi Loeb has articulated an anti-maxim suggesting "if we only look for the extraordinary, we may never see the ordinary." The only way to proceed here is to actually look, collect data, and ask more questions. If we dismiss it, we'll miss something. Carl Sagan's book Contact, though science fiction, argued for 'subtle' alien contact.
