It seems to me that it isn't a lack of options for alternatives, but a lack of resolve from governments and corporations to utilizing resources to implementing them on grander scales. If left to the public, most people won't have the means to installing solar for example. The cost/benefits, even if it locks in utility rates, doesn't make sense. Making consumers responsible for the change is not wise policy. Establishing wind and gravity batteries is smart, continuance on improving battery will happen, but if governments would prioritize putting solar panels on all houses, take down billiards and put up solar panels- that would do more to help offset global cost as we transition off petroleum than anything the consumers could do in mass. If every home had solar, there would be enough excess energy in the grid to run desalination plants and reclaim some of the water from global warming.
