Let’s open this with I am a pretty judgmental fellow. Seriously, I struggle. Getting angry is judgement, right? So, yesterday, when my son was killing me in Minecraft because I am too slow, I got so mad I aborted the game and we had words… I hate that about me. I was slow in the game, but quick to abandon ship. Oh, and his little 8 year old mind is sharp enough to cut to the quick. Why do we judge? What is this thing that we do?

Before we tackle this thing, do we need to define it? Most of my ideas about judgement comes from early childhood and the scripture my family’s faith and family gave me. Old and New testament has clear edicts and warnings against judgement. Funny, too, is that most of the family and religious folks I knew were rather judgmental.

Buddhism, which fits my ideas of counseling, focuses on empathy and compassion. There is justice, too, which is not necessarily judgement, but even in this too many people refer to karmic debt as “haha, what goes around comes around.”

That, too, comes around, don’t you know?

Do we live in the most dangerous times because we are more judgmental, or do we just have more tools and media that unconsciously inflate our sense of judgement, which comes with anger, which leads to hate, which…
