Not all hypnosis techniques are created equal. There is a difference between stage hypnosis and clinical hypnosis. There are hypnosis modalities between those two. I have a certificate of training and am allowed limited treatment engagement, like smoking cessation and or general stress reduction, but I can’t use my level of training to do clinical hypnosis therapy, even though I hold a license to do clinical therapy. In order to do clinical hypnosis, additional certification is required. Why? Likely to ensure a minimum level of competency.
If you asked me what that minimal competency requirement is, I would have to say, I am uncertain. My license, as an LPC, Licensed professional counselor, is evidence that I have met a minimum standard of competency in providing mental health treatment. Mind you, even that nuance statement is carefully measured. People have divided therapies and techniques into domain names. There are things counselors can do that is the same things that a psychologist can do, and vice versa, but they use different language to convey the same thing. Licensing boards fight for labels and definition at the state and federal level in order to help define areas of competency, but also to control the market and where money is allowed to flow. There is always a financial incentive behind the restriction of labels.
