I had my son this week. We discussed movie options, and decided on one from my collection, Fly Away Home, starring Anna Paquin, Jeff Daniels, and Dana Delaney. He liked it well enough we watched it twice. If you’re not familiar with the movie, essentially the protagonists, 14 year old female, was in a car crash with her mother. Mother dies, and she goes to live with her father. She finds and raises geese, and in effort to teach them to fly south for the winter, she learns to fly an ultralight. It is essentially a story based on Bill Lishman experience teaching geese to follow human in an ultra light.

I suppose we picked it because we both like animals and we’re both aviation nuts. He and I fly a lot, commercial airplanes. He is a fan of Captain Chesley Burnett Sullenberger III and Jeff Skiles, and we have reenacted that scene pretending to be them.

If you haven’t seen it and you don’t want spoilers, stop here and go see the movie. It’s an important movie, and I highly recommend it.

7 years olds can ask some serious questions

The second time we watched it, we arrived a scene where father’s aileron failed, and he crashed. Amy, played by Ana, lands her ultralight to check on dad. He is hurt, but okay. She wants to stay with him. He insists she finished…
