The Fireman Twins
My son asked a random question about twins. “Do they share the same thoughts?” Neither he nor I know any twins. I have been fond of twins ever since that Double Mint commercial! I was not able to divine where son’s question originated. I sorted his question a little further, and then started with what I think I understand. Identical twins are not telepathic. It appears that identical twins are more differentiated when they live together, as they are determined to distinguish themselves from each other. Twins that are separated don’t have the pressure to have obvious identifiable attributes. Studies on identical twins reveal we may be more genetically determined than we like to imagine. It doesn’t mean nature and nurture doesn’t shape us, it just means there are more variables that make us who we are than we allow for.
You know there has to be myth busting when you find articles that include ‘true’ in the title. There are true stories, and myth stories, and a whole mess of stuff to sort. What plays the biggest role in shaping humans? Environment? There appears to be a gene for alcoholism, but if you never drink that doesn’t get turned on, right? Some people claim they even look at bacon and their cholesterol goes up!
