People tend to marry the primary caregiver that they had the most trouble with growing up, in order to vicariously heal that relationship through others. People also tend to love others the way they most wanted to be loved.

Those two themes have worked well for me in getting an idea of the general subconscious patterns we engage in. There are caveats, of course. We're complex beings. :) I like looking for patterns. Speaking for myself, I married my grandmother, twice before I figured that one out. :) Interestingly, my ex married her father- He's Thai, I am Caucasian, and he and I are exactly the same in temperament and interests and hobbies... She once said, 'I hate my dad,' and I said, 'interesting, because you married him.' We were divorced soon after. LOL
