Society Will Change After Aliens are Confirmed
Ed Simon, journalist for the Slate hit a home run there. This upcoming UFO hearing is a game changer.
Simon is right, in his article, to draw on both science and science fiction. If we allow there to be no other first contact societies on earth, then this information will be unprecedented. Carl Sagan suggested the Sumerian culture was the first contact culture. Others have pointed to Egypt as being the first contact culture. Maybe the difference today is we, the people of Earth, are more connected and capable of processing this together. Maybe now we can have consensus on how this knowledge will change us. Victims and survivors are born in the same event, trauma, what we choose to do with that knowledge will determine what camp we fall into.
Fiction, whether it’s science fiction or fantasy, is a potential model for the variations and potential outcomes after disclosure. War of the Worlds may not be pleasant, but it is one possible outcome. Not likely, but within tolerance. In terms of outcomes, Star Trek the original series is the best outcome and War of the Worlds not quite the worst-case scenario.
