Angels and Demons
I am reading this book, Remarkable Healings: A Psychiatrist Discovers Unsuspected Roots of Mental and Physical Illness, by Shakutntala Modi, MD. It’s a surprising book, perhaps a little disturbing. I suspect that disturbance is due to the theme pinging against my own internal cognitive dissonance. Perhaps saying that is just recognition I hold two, discordant, unreconcilable modalities. Or, perhaps, suggested by Doctor Modi, I have two combatting spirits. Is there a place in modern science to discuss this, at least in theory? There is a truth in this book, echoed by other medical doctors, other psychiatrists, that ‘it doesn’t matter what we ultimately believe-’ people who discover past lives and or influencing spirits under hypnosis get better. Better is a measure of something, right?
I am not recommending a belief or disbelief in this paradigm. The book I am referencing doesn’t advocate for any one belief system. Doctor Modi simply engages the unconscious, asks questions, and allows that dialogue to drive recovery. In essence, that’s what good counselors do. I suspect I am a good counselor. I get told as much, but that doesn’t mean anything other than I established rapport. That’s essential, but not the only needed thing. For the most part, I tend towards positive, unconditional regard.
