The Metaproblem

If remedies are always found in goal related activities, why aren’t we all more goal driven?

Assume for the moment depression is a symptom of something bigger yet undefined. It is easy to argue for this if you consider directly after a mental health assessment, the next compulsory component of mental health is to create no less than two, non-medical related, person centered goals. States, insurances, and community clinics will not serve without a written goal. Is this because even the experts don’t believe depression is simply a result of bad chemistry, or is there something to having goals that improve our conditions.

Clearly the goal of goals is not to distract the person from depression. Goals are the activities that lead people towards competencies. Competency leads to self-reliance and confidence.

Lack of confidence leads to confusion. Without clarity, uncertainty rules making it difficult to make decisions. Surprisingly, the more options and paths available, the greater the uncertainty in terms of choosing a path. One of the symptoms of depression is racing thoughts, literally going around in circles in your mind, maybe even pacing or going in circles in your body.
