The name is German. I think it may have had two g's in it previously, but it was a real hardship writing, back when ink was a precious commodity. It worked in my favor, for decades EGE was at the top of Space Invaders at my local arcade. If I could have those quarters back now... And assure aliens I don't want to shoot them...
