Children at Risk
So, the Rising released an interesting segment discussing exploitation of children by social media. It needs to be said, but this is really not a new thing. I don’t understand why we can’t have this conversation. Per Children at Risk, an organization trying to bring awareness to child sex trafficking so we can stop this thing, one of predators on being arrested told the media, “We don’t have to groom kids. Society is doing it for us.”
There are lots of ways we can discuss how children are at risk. We, as a species, are not taking care of each other, or are children. Profiting off children likely goes back to beginning of time, with some caveats of gray areas. There was a time when the age of adulthood was much lower, expectations were different. In todays economic landscape, you don’t become an adult until age 40, you paid off your student loan debts, and moved out of your parent’s basement.
In the 1970s, parents pushed for a law that would allow them to have ‘commercial’ blockers so advertisements targeting children could be disrupted. Lobbyists for corporations and advertisements blocked. “How dare you stop me from telling your kid, we have this toy that will make their life sweeter, and your parenting job easier.”
