The Persistent Illusion of Time
We too easily forget how strange time is. If you send a friend to a black hole, your friend slows as he approaches, and eventually comes to a stop. To him, times continues with no apparent interruption. Clocks tick slower on the surface of a planet than they would at the top of a building, or than they would in orbit, and so we have to tell the clocks to communicate and calibrate off an applied standard.
