I imagine I am dating myself when I lead with a scene from the movie, ‘Logan’s Run,’ in which Logan, a lonely male turns to the computer to find a partner for the night. This is Logan’s Run meets Star Trek, and lonely people put themselves into the computer, essentially get beamed up, and then beamed into the apartment of anyone who is wanting. This is how Logan meets Jessica. That changes his life.
I suspect, modern dating apps are not going to get the same results, though we seem to be moving in the same direction. Specifically, I am referring to the features that are being added where APP holders can live stream. This features brings a whole new level to the dating scene that might not be in the best interest of people who seek genuine, long term partners.
To begin with, a person is competing with a good number of other ‘channels’ if you will. And they are channels. People are singing, dancing, putting on makeup, sleeping, even living their lives in a non-stop narrative that less than podcast, more than reality television, and goes nowhere. Oh, sure, I can imagine someone claiming it led to the love of their life. It may even be real love. But if you imagine all the work it took to be that entertaining, and all the channels a person shifted through to find your channel, there is reason to be concerned. Even if you had a hook, how long does a hook last? The reason we have so many channels and different types of programming is people get bored. If we turn people into television channels, how long does it take before the partner has to bounce…
