The Soul’s Reminder of Purpose

How many movies in 2020 snuck by you without being seen because the world was interrupted by a crisis? The movie Soul was that snuck by me, but I caught up to it yesterday. It had been on my list. I had asked my movie friend if he wanted to see it. He has a lot on his list to. His wife frequently adds things to his list. Strangers have asked me, have you seen Soul, yet? Do you have a list? The visual tone of this movie is subdued, not quite melancholy, not quite joyful, kind of the like the jazz slash blues that comprises the soundtrack. There is humor embedded within, but also humor that can only be held from a perspective outside of the frame of life. Kind of like not finding something humorous in the moment, but in hindsight- you can laugh about it, or at least you get laughs when you tell that moment.

One of the scenes in the movie provoked a childhood memory of a recurring dream I had. Do you remember these candies?

Candy dots? My dream was being on conveyor, like in the movie, but also very much like this ribbon of candy. It was an endless ribbon conveying souls, and I was on it, just a sole, pastel, colored candy, amidst other souls. We were being…
