The Unspoken Truth about Obesity

There is a conversation about weight loss and gain that needs to be had. An honest discussion. This conversation shouldn’t be polarized. This conversation is already full of emotions, for many reason, not the least of which is it feels personal. Contrary to popular belief, loosing weight is not about will power. That’s not an absolute statement, because some smart ass will chime in and say ‘well for me…’ There are exceptions. This is 90 percent not will power. Let me explain.

The person who wrote the opinion piece above is not wrong! What would I know?

First off, who am I and what business do I have discussing this. I am a counselor, licensed in Texas. Granted, Texas is not known for being kindly to mental health. We’re known as the ‘pull yourself up by your own bootstraps’ state. Too bad most aren’t born with boot straps, and too many ‘experts’ tell you ‘don’t trust the bootstraps, I am a professional. I know more than you.’

In the course of counseling, weight invariably comes up and so it would be reasonable if I am somewhat knowledgeable about health in general, diet and exercise.

Secondly, I am mandated by the state to discuss weight. Technically, I work for a community mental health clinic who gets paid by the state and we have to check off on ‘we…
