UFO Sightings on the Rise

What does it mean when government officials and media say UFO sightings are increasing exponentially, or skyrocketing?

So, on the 13th of January BBC News, Brandon Drenon discusses the delayed UFO report to Congress, discussing how military personnel’s reporting on UFOs have increased. It took the number of 144 from the original report and added 500. That may seem significant, but even in that admission, they immediately rule out most of those sightings with mundane explanations, which means it’s not 644? What kind of math is being done here and why the obfuscation? Why say it’s increased, and then cut that figure in half? Like, here’s a pie for you, but I am going to take 3/4 away from you, so there.

Less than 500 increase seems meaningless when there is a reported database available with 250,000 inexplicable UFO reports! More than that, there is arguably a substantial quantitative and qualitative distinction to be had between troops on the ground observing things in the sky and what pilots see in the sky. Finding balloons and drones and other airborne debris is more likely closer to ground level than at 32,000 feet. Not impossible to have airborne trash higher, but the assumption is that the higher in altitude the less likely you see trash.
