It strikes me as an unnecessary shortcut. We humans have already demonstrated an ability to warm up a planet by influencing the atmosphere. It stands to reason, we could do the same there only this time with the intent, and in about a hundred years sufficiently change the Martian atmosphere to start a cascading, global warming event.
