What Aliens Have that We Don’t

Have you ever wondered why independence is so damn expensive? I’ve been doing my homework, thinking about a future retirement with off-grid capabilities, and the good stuff ain’t cheap. Even with off-grid capabilities, you’re still dependent on systems for repairs and commodities. In the old days, like the beginning of humans, it was possible for an individual, or a family, or even a group to live off the land and minimize human interaction. The Swiss Family Robinson, 1812 by Johann David Wyss was the idealized, great escape, except for perhaps the children, who may want to grow up and have a family of their own. Lost in Space, original broadcast 1965, the Robinson family were again, the idealized, escapist family. Funny, in both stories, even in isolation, neither family were alone.

Netflix’s ‘Lost in Space’ is a modern take on a classic story

You could live in the desert off the grid. They have machines that can pull water right from the air, run it through filters, and give you more than enough water to survive. Food would be the next consideration. I suppose there are some thrifty people who make beans and rice work for a spell. Probably grow a garden in a greenhouse. Did you know it’s against the law to collect rain water in Nevada? You can be fined for not installing your solar panels to code? So much for doing it myself…
