Worrying Less
There is a difference between stress and anxiety. I probably have both, though I don’t like acknowledging the latter. There are studies that say people with good boundaries have less anxiety. There are studies that show people who score high in empathy have more anxiety. Having boundaries and empathy can be a challenge because the border move. Most care agencies strive towards person centered modalities. Very few employers come at employees with person centered concepts, even if they want those concepts practiced with their clients. Can there be a person-centered work model for employees? Can an employee ever say NO without fear of negative consequences?
It seems like fairness is a tricky thing. The goal of a person centered mindset is to recognize all beings have value. The practice is treating people with respect and dignity. We all agree to this in principle. Few of us practice it. In practice we are more likely to espouse ‘it’s my way or the highway’ policies. And there are times we should probably lean that way, so I am not saying it shouldn’t ever be used as a strategy. In an emergency, if I am in charge of triaging and making decisions, I need to know I give direction it’s followed right then and there. Lives may depend on it.
For most people, life rarely rises to that level of emergency, but to a one- when it’s clear we are in crisis, people step up and follow directions without hesitancy. It’s one of our most underrated, and precious attributes as a species. WE STEP UP…
