UFOs and Aliens
You know a good movie when it stands the test of time. It’s watchable no matter how much time has passed. Close Encounters of the Third Kind is such a movie. Did you know there were government agencies, including NASA, that were opposed to it’s production? Does that mean the movie was too accurate? I suppose scientists and skeptic might just be worried it would feed into the wrong discourse, keeping UFOs prominent in the public mind- but is that really so bad? How many good scientist look back at childhood and point to an artifact of fiction as being the thing that increased their interest in science?
Stephen Spielberg:
I really found my faith when I learned the government was opposed to the film… If NASA took the time to write me a 25 page letter, then I knew something must be happening. When they read the script, they got very angry and felt that it was a film that would be dangerous.
Why all this anger over aliens?
More than one source says President Ronald Regan held a private screening of Close Encounters in 1982 with Spielberg, astronauts, and other VIPs. He stated “There are a number of people in this room who know that everything on that screen is true.” Maybe Reagan was like me and finds it easy to believe movies hold an ounce…
