I hope you will find this essay, this step back in time, entertaining and uplifting. I am not saying, at this point, Hollywood seems to be a soft disclosure project to prepare humanity for first contact with aliens. I have read many UFO books that say as much. I have said as much. But today, it’s just a fun look back on some things popping up in my brain. Our first stop is 1964, and an episode of the Outer Limits. I am going to connect it with Star Trek’s future, both TOS, and TNG, but also, some real science. Science that was being dreamed up before it’s time.
Let’s start with a bit of science. Theodore Maiman developed the first working laser at Hughes Research Lab in 1960. I would see my first laser show at the Bicentennial 4th of July celebration, with Johnny Cash at the Washington Monument, 1976. I would see lots of lasers in my favorite shows, Star Trek, Logan’s Run, Space 1999… Oh, these faces seem like long lost friends.
Sally Kellerman, actress who played Hot Lips Houlihan in the movie M.A.S.H. is in this episode of the Outer Limits. She takes out a bottle of wine with a laser. How Star Trek is that?! Phaser set to designate!
