Why is “As a Scientist’ Used to Defend Atheism

Are there scientist that believe in an afterlife? I have read some, talked to some. So why is it there are so many people who lead an argument against an afterlife start with, “as a scientist, I don’t believe in…” Are people that use that phrase truly scientists? Nick Cook, former aviation journalist, who was the editor for Jane’s Defense Weekly, the international defense journal- not really a scientist, but well informed. He probably got a degree grounded in material science. (‘Defence’ if you’re British. Seriously, why doesn’t the US spell it that way?! And you wonder why I struggle with grammar?!) Does he need a degree or a masters or a PhD to be credible? By the way, Nick is one of the winners of Robert Bigelow’s BICS contest. Do you suppose the judges were scientists? Did they dismiss him because he isn’t a scientist?

BICS was founded in June 2020 by aerospace entrepreneur Robert T. Bigelow to support research into both the survival of human consciousness after physical death and, based on data from such studies, the nature of the afterlife. Robert Bigelow is the founder of Bigelow Aerospace. For decades he has also supported serious investigations into consciousness and manifestations of unusual phenomena that are not yet understood by science.
